Our Problem

Sin

...is the violation of God's law. "Everyone who sins breaks the law; in fact, sin is lawlessness" (1 John 3:4).

...is the failure to do good. "Anyone, then, who knows the good he ought to do and doesn't do it, sins" (James 4:17).

...comes from our own desires. "When tempted, no one should say, 'God is tempting me.' For God cannot be tempted by evil, nor does he tempt anyone; but each one is tempted when, by his own evil desire, he is dragged away and enticed. Then, after desire has conceived, it gives birth to sin; and sin, when it is full-grown, gives birth to death" (James 1:13-15).

...is a personal responsibility. "The soul who sins is the one who will die. The son will not share the guilt of the father, nor will the father share the guilt of the son. The righteousness of the righteous man will be credited to him, and the wickedness of the wicked will be charged against him" (Ezekiel 18:20).

...has been committed by everyone. "...for all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God" (
Romans 3:23).

...is addictive. "Jesus replied, 'I tell you the truth, everyone who sins is a slave to sin" (John 8:34).

...is deceptive. "For sin, seizing the opportunity afforded by the commandment, deceived me, and through the commandment put me to death" (Romans 7:11).

...destroys peace. "'There is no peace,' says my God, 'for the wicked'" (Isaiah 57:21).

...brings death. "For the wages of sin is death, but the gift of God is eternal life in Christ Jesus our Lord" (Romans 6:23).

...separates us from God. "But your iniquities have separated you from your God; your sins have hidden his face from you, so that he will not hear" (Isaiah 59:2).

...leads to hell. "But the cowardly, the unbelieving, the vile, the murderers, the sexually immoral, those who practice magic arts, the idolaters and all liars--their place will be in the fiery lake of burning sulfur. This is the second death" (Revelation 21:8).

For other examples of specific sins, please read passages such as Matthew 15:19, 1 Corinthians 6:9-10, and Galatians 5:19-21.
